13. Temple Community Service Corps

Who does it:
Congregation Gates of Heaven in Schenectady, NY
What they do:
Offers summer employment to qualified high school and college youth in selected community agencies
Time commitment:
Two to four hours per week for program manager
Who they do it for and why:
Since the program is financed by temple member contributions and fundraising projects, it offers community service agencies much needed help. Participants are selected through an application and interview process. Students have been placed with day care centers, food distribution programs, with Boys Clubs as counselors, and as nursing home aides, among other positions.
The program has become a vital part of the temple and community's Summer programming and has made a lifelong impact on the individuals involved by forging meaningful links and friendships between temple members and community service providers.
We would need:
¨ One or more persons willing to assume leadership of the project and manage it.
¨ Identification of interest among Temple Israel youth.
¨ Someone to determine how such services fit in with current programs provided by the Tulsa area social service agencies.
¨ A specific fundraising project to finance the program.
