14. Community Wide Health Fair
Who does it:
Congregation Beth Emeth in Albany, NY
What they do:
Provide free medical screenings, medical educational lectures and health-related information to poorer residents of the area.
Time commitment:
Variable, depending on whom does what in planning the event; non-recurrent.
Who they do it for and why:
Physicians and other health care providers volunteer their time to offer half-hour lectures on a variety of topics and to assist with over 24 types of medical screenings. All area hospitals are involved as well as pharmaceutical companies, nursing homes, health-related organizations and health insurers that sponsor information booths with free handouts and samples. Free transportation is made available from the underprivileged areas of the city. The event is extensively promoted and endorsed by the ministerial organization.
We would need:
¨ One or more persons willing to assume leadership of the project and manage it..
¨ Someone to determine if such services are presently provided in the Tulsa area. If so, do sponsoring organizations need volunteers? This information is probably available from social service agencies or local hospitals.
¨ If such a program does not exist, contact must be made with other organizations (local hospitals, social agencies, nursing homes, etc.) to determine their interest in participation.
¨ A pool of volunteers willing to participate in the program as their interests and the program's needs coincide.
