3.Free Medical & Legal Services
Who does it:
Not specified
What they do:
Physicians and attorneys donate a portion of their services to those in need who are unable to pay.
Time commitment:
Variable.
Who they do it for and why:
A group of physicians in Boston developed the Boston Jewish Medically Uninsured Project that does a mitzvah by providing services free of charge to uninsured citizens. Similarly, attorneys in the congregation can set up their own program either on a pro bono or minimal fee scale. The attorneys could also arrange working sessions at the temple, teaching people some of their basic rights and how to take care of many of those legal needs that do not actually require an attorney. These include, for example, how to read and understand simple contracts, tenant rights, consumer rights, temporary restraining orders against abusive partners, and handling small claims court cases.
We would need:
¨ Physicians and attorneys willing to donate a portion of their time to a structured program.
¨ Someone to determine if such opportunities are presently provided in the Tulsa area. If so, do the sponsoring organizations need more participants?
¨ One or more persons willing to assume leadership of the project, then develop and manage it.
