Meals for the Homeless

Who we do it for and why:
The Day Center for the Homeless provides meals, daytime shelter and other services for the indigent.

Houses of worship take scheduled turns with the evening meals. As an adjunct to its commitment to Mazon, Temple Israel cooks and serves dinner appoximately six or seven times a year.

On the 5th Sunday of those months with five weeks and Easter, starting at about 3:15 p.m. Two volunteers prepare frozen entrees in the Temple kitchen, then deliver them to the Day Center. Two additional volunteers meet them at 5:15 p.m. to serve the meal and are done by 6:15.

On Christmas Eve, volunteers meet at the Temple kitchen to prepare and wrap cold sandwich meals including home-baked desserts. On Christmas Day, two volunteers pick up the meals and deliver them to the Day Center.
Also, a few days before each serving Sunday and Christmas, one or two
volunteers do the grocery shopping.

We need:
Two to four adult volunteers to rotate the Sunday cooking duties, two to four adults and /or older children to rotate the serving duties and two tofour to rotate the shopping. NO COOKING SKILLS ARE NEEDED to prepare these meals.

Time commitment:
One to three hours on the 5th Sunday of the month in those months that
contain five Sundays, plus Easter and Christmas.
